Piece of history uncovered by construction at Grand Rapids Public Museum

Crews working on the new expansion at the Grand Rapid's Public Museum have now uncovered equipment from the old Voigt Mill that once stood at the site.

After going through the archives and looking at old photographs and drawings in order to figure out what the piece of equipment was, it's been determined to be quite a crucial part of the mill: two water-powered turbines.

The construction team that found them are currently working on the $50 million expansion at the museum that will include a number of new features, including a riverside terrace and an outdoor classroom.

Crews will spend the next few weeks removing the mill equipment and seeing what can be saved.
