Corewell Health among first to successfully treat Afib with new technology

Utilizing innovative technology that uses pulsed electric fields, Corewell Health is now among the first in the nation to successfully treat patients with atrial fibrillation, and the first in the Midwest.

Also known as Afib, the condition causes an irregular and often very rapid heart rhythm, that affects more than 59 million people worldwide, and without intervention can worsen.

According to a news release, the new technology, called the 'PulseSelect' PFA system, delivers electric fields through an ablation catheter designed specifically to interrupt irregular electrical pathways in the heart that trigger Afib, without causing injury to the surrounding tissue.

The first two procedures in the nation were performed in Texas and California on Feb. 8th and 9th.
