Lawmakers seek to continue and increase Great Lakes Initiative's funding

Lawmakers in Washington have started a push to continue funding for the Great Lakes.

The bipartisan group known as The Great Lakes Task Force, is hoping to see an increase in funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which helps address a variety of issues that impact the Great Lakes, from PFAS contamination to invasive species like Asian carp.

The initiative is currently set to end in 2026. U.S Representative Bill Huizenga and other supporters hope to not only extend the initiative's deadline, but also receive an increase in the funds from the current $475 million a year to $500 million annually.
