Aris Hampers dies; rock disc jockey was an icon on WLAV, 101.3 The Fox

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Aris Hampers has died after contending with cancer for years.

The local disc jockey who became an icon on radio stations such as WLAV and 101.3 The FOX in the 1970s and '80s, died after a long battle with cancer. LocalSpins.com editor John Sinkevics tells us Hampers was popular not only on the airwaves but in West Michigan community circles.

"He was just a fixture on the scene. And anybody who knew him at all would see him out and about all the time and chat with him. And he would love to tell stories and share those tales," Sinkevics said.

Hampers also worked for radio stations WCUZ, WFFX, WKLQ, WBFX, WVIC and WMAX.

"And he literally did change the face of radio here in the Grand Rapids area. He told stories about the past in the '70s and all the great things that happened in the heydey of radio," Sinkevics said.
