Wife among 2 arrested for SW MI soldier's murder

ST. JOSEPH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The wife of a Berrien County soldier shot and killed on New Year's Eve is facing murder charges.

Jail records show 22-year-old Kemia Nekenah Hassel was arrested on murder charges Saturday. The charges indicate the murder involved a family member and a gun.

The St. Joseph Township Police Department says a second person was also arrested in connection with the homicide of Tyrone Hassel III, and is facing an open murder charge.

Hassel, 23, was on leave visiting family for the holidays when he was shot multiple times around 11:10 p.m. on New Year's Eve. Officers found Hassel gravely injured in the 2000 block of Colfax Avenue in St. Joseph Township.
