Authorities: Fatal crash suspect kills self in jail

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The man accused of causing the January crash that killed a father and son died as a result of an apparent suicide at the Kent County jail Saturday night, authorities say.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department said that during a routine block check around 10 p.m., correctional officers found Joseph Hanna, 39, in distress after he apparently harmed himself. Despite efforts to save him, Hanna died around 10:40 p.m.

Hanna was allegedly driving under the influence of marijuana on the evening of Jan. 4 when he rammed into another vehicle on 14 Mile Road near Harvard Avenue in northeastern Kent County.
