ORLEANS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Two types of PFAS compounds have been found in the water at the facility that houses the Orleans Head Start Center northwest of Ionia.
The compounds PFBS and PFHxA were found in samples drawn from the well at EightCAP's Ionia County Outreach Office. PFBS was found at 180 parts per trillion and PFHxA at 2 ppt. The federal Environmental Protection Agency doesn't have a safety standard for those compounds specifically, but the standard for PFAS is 70 ppt.
EightCAP is providing bottled water for drinking and cooking at the building as it works with the state to address the issue. A second test will be conducted to confirm the initial test results, and EightCAP says it will conduct quarterly monitoring from now on.
The EightCAP building on Orleans Road in Orleans Township also contains staff and meeting offices for the community outreach nonprofit. Its water was tested as part of a statewide initiative by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to look for PFAS, an emerging contaminant and likely carcinogen.
