GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A driver from Rockford who slammed into the back of stalled vehicle on US-131, killing a pregnant woman and her toddler son, won’t face additional jail time.

A judge Monday credited Monty Parker Jr. for one day in jail and sentenced him to 150 hours on a work crew for his role in the Jan. 7 crashthat killed Valery Arreola and her 3-year-old son, Guillermo

Arreola was 8 months pregnant at the time of the crash. Her infant, Emilio, died at the hospital following an emergency delivery.

Arreola was merging onto northbound US-131 from Franklin Street in Grand Rapids when her car stalled. She was on her cellphone asking her father for help when Parker’s pickup truck rear-ended her car, Michigan State Police said. Her dad heard the crash.

Arreola’s other son, 5-year-old Max, suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Parker was treated at the hospital and released.
