Girl, 6, killed in Muskegon Heights hit-and-run

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WOOD) — A 6-year-old girl was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Muskegon Heights Sunday morning.

"This has been a devastating day for our whole family," said Amanda Jones, a cousin who identified the girl as Taylor Davis.

The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. along 6th Street between Oakwood and Maplewood avenues, about a block from where Taylor lived. The Muskegon Heights Police Department said she was hit by a Chevrolet Suburban.

She was taken to an area hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Family members said later Sunday that funeral arrangements were pending.

Jones told 24 Hour News 8 that Taylor was riding her bike with her cousins at the time of the crash.

"She wasn't in the street and the other kids who were with her, my other nieces, said that he (the driver) deliberately jumped the curb and hit her," Jones said.

The driver took off after the crash. Lamonte Wilkinson said he heard the crash, got in his car and followed the suspect to the Mona Lake Mobile Home Park off Seaway Drive and Hoyt Street.

"I saw a guy get out the car, take his plate off and walk in the house. And I called the police and stayed there until they got there," Wilkinson told 24 Hour News 8.

Officers soon arrived and arrested the suspect. Police Chief Joseph Thomas told 24 Hour News 8 over the phone that without the help of the public, specifically Wilkinson, they wouldn't have been able to find the suspect so quickly.
