COVERT TOWNSHIP (WOOD-AM) - Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is now urging the Department of Energy to keep the Palisades nuclear power plant in Covert Township open.

She called it a "top priority" in a letter to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

Entergy is planning to shut it down next month when its fuel supply runs out.

Whitmer says there have been conversations between her administration, Entergy, and other interested operators in keeping the facility open through 2031 - when its license expires.

Michael Keegan with Don't Waste Michigan has been trying to shut down the facility for decades. He thinks the letter - and the request - is a political stunt.

"This is just a political power play by Granholm and Gretchen Whitmer," Keegan said. "It's going to be an albatross, it's going to be a millstone around their necks and this sucker cannot run."
