MI watchdog calls for federal help with GRPD investigation

Michigan's civil rights watchdog is asking for help from the U.S. Department of Justice on an investigation into the Grand Rapids Police Department and possible systemic discrimination.

The calls comes after GRPD released video footage of a police officer shooting and killing 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya.

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights began an investigation into GRPD in 2019, however the investigation was never complete due to a lack of resources.

MDCR says there are currently 29 open complaints against the department.
