Pine Rest seeking emergency adolescent treatment unit

Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services is requesting emergency approval from the state for a 40-bed adolescent psychiatric care unit.

Pine Rest says they based the request on what they call "turnaways."

Bob Nykamp, vice president and chief operating officer at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, says the term is used for the data point that describes the number of people who come to Pine Rest and the system doesn't have a bed available for them.

Nykamp says the turnaway rate for kids is up 600%.
