Grand Rapids Fire Department firefighters are honoring those who died on September 11, 2001 with a grueling stair climb.
The climb at the stairs on Division north of I-196 is a ritual for the department.
Lt. Cory Kernodle says they climb 11 flights up and down with pants, boots, a helmet and air packs on.
Kernodle says the gear weighs around 80 pounds .
He says the climb gets emotional as they think about the responders who were answering their last alarm call.
