Consumers: Thousand Remain Powerless, Crews Working Around the Clock

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Crews from multiple states are working in 16-hour shifts to restore electricity to thousands of powerless Consumers Energy customers, the utility said.

It's expected that most outages will be fixed by late Friday. Some, however, may remain without electricity until Saturday or Sunday.

Nearly 240,000 Consumers Energy customers remain without power, according to numbers posted to the utility's outage map at 7 a.m.

The utility also said yesterday that many of the estimated restoration times posted yesterday were inaccurate.

"What typically happens at the start of the storm like this, a lot of the times are generated automatically and then as we begin to assess the damage and make our plans for the restoration work, that’s when you see some of the changes," Brian Wheeler, a utility spokesperson, told WOOD-TV.
