Mel Trotter beginning renovations to shelter

Mel Trotter Ministries leaders took hammers to the wall on Tuesday morning to celebrate the start of a massive renovation to the homeless shelter in Grand Rapids' Heartside neighborhood.

The organization is working to raise $14.9 million to expand programs and renovate the shelter.

The new shelter will have a dorm-style layout with two people per room and two rooms joined by one bathroom.

The project is expected to take 18 months.
