Grand Valley State University started testing wastewater for COVID-19 in November and is now expanding the program.
Researchers say the best part is the state can keep an eye on the spread of COVID-19 without wasting time, money or spreading resources too thin.
Project research assistant Alexis Porter says the project is also noninvasive.
Coronavirus shows up in waster roughly a week before symptoms appear.
