Secretary of State designates new speech impediment

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is unveiling a new designation for people with communication impediments.

Legislation signed in June 2020, took effect this month, allowing special designations attached to vehicle registration for individuals with autism or hearing disabilities.

Sirens and flashing lights can be challenging for some people with autism and can cause individuals to act erratic and escalate incidents.

The designation would be voluntary and would pop up when police run a license or a plate.
