Lawsuit alleges EMU officials covered up assaults that were reported

A lawsuit filled in federal court alleges Eastern Michigan University officials were aware of several sexual assault allegations and failed to take action.

Law enforcement are currently investigating more than 30 rape cases that occurred on or around the campus between 2015 and 2020.

The suits name Title IX Director Melody Werner, the university's regents, EMU police and two fraternities.

Campus Police Chief Robert Heighes is also named in a suit that alleges his nephew was a president of a fraternity that had a rape case reported and he failed to act on the case.

The university denies the allegations.
