Trans athletes would be banned from teams of gender identity under new bill

A bill in the Michigan Legislature would require transgender high school athletes to join teams based on their biological anatomy at birth.

Over 20 states are currently looking at similar bills.

State Senator Aric Nesbitt is a co-sponsor of the bill and says it is about fairness and equity in high school sports.

Nesbitt says there are biological males that are joining women's teams and breaking records and preventing women from scholarships.

Erin Knott, the executive director of the Detroit-based LGBTQ advocacy group Equality Michigan, says the bill is hurtful to students and doesn't treat kids fairly.
