Whitmer signs bill for $2.5 billion in COVID relief, vetoes parts of bill

Governor Gretchen Whitmer is signing at least $2.5 billion of supplemental COVID-19 funding into law, while vetoing parts of the bill that limit her powers.

Whitmer's office is currently trying to determine if the $840 million in federal funding for K-12 schools can be separated from the language requiring Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to give up their powers to close schools and suspend high school sports.

If the funding and the language can be separated, the bill will provide a total of $3.6 billion in funding.

Whitmer also vetoed $87 million in funding for private schools, $150 million for the state unemployment trust fund, $405 million for business relief and $10 million in aid for parents who enroll their kids in summer school.
