Lowell officer charged after shooting at fleeing car

A former Lowell police officer is charged with assault after shooting and wounding a suspect after a chase in August.

Forty-year-old Jason Diaz was arraigned on Monday on one count of misconduct in office by a public official, one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and one count of weapons-careless discharge causing injury.

The incident happened on August 29, 2020 after a high-speed chase led officers through Kent and Ionia counties.

Diaz allegedly shot at the fleeing vehicle eight times and wounded the passenger in the head.
