Newaygo High School student seriously injured in small explosion

A 16-year-old student was seriously injured Monday morning when a small explosion went off at Newaygo High School.

Newaygo Public Schools originally said the explosion was caused by a firework however, officials have determined that to be untrue.

The device was detonated by accident by the 16-year-old student who brought it to school.

Four other students sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital by their parents.

Both school officials and police say the student was not trying to attack anyone but had a severe lack of judgement .
