SW Michigan First losing support after Chatfield hire

A Kalamazoo city commissioner is calling on organizations to stop supporting Southwest Michigan First after the organization hired former Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield.

Chatfield is now serving as the CEO.

City Commissioner Erin Knott says Chatfield pushed back against amending the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act.

Knott says she wonders if Southwest Michigan First is using a diversity, equity and inclusion lens when making their hiring decision.

The city decided to stop providing $100,000 in funding for the organization on Monday night.
