GRFD changing safety efforts after increase in deadly fires

The city of Grand Rapids saw an increase in the number of deadly fires in 2020 with five incidents leading to nine deaths.

The number is the highest death toll since the early 2000's.

Grand Rapids Fire Department officials say all the fires had one thing in common: no early warning system.

The rise is deaths is coming after years of falling numbers due to the city's residential safety program.

Since 2013, fire crews have set up tens of thousands of smoke detectors at the request of homeowners.
