1st Black judge in US Western District of Michigan Benjamin Gibson dies

The first Black judge for the U.S. Western District of Michigan has died at the age of 89.

The Honorable Benjamin Gibson died January 13.

His family says he graduated with honors at the age of 16 and left home to join the Army.

After his time in the military, he attended law school and became the assistant attorney general.

Gibson went on to become the first Black man to hold the position of assistant prosecutor for Ingham County.

He is the only person of color to hold the position of federal judge in Michigan.
