Lake Michigan saw the deadliest year in the last decade with 57 drownings.
The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project has tracked drownings since 2010.
The total is more than twice the numbers for 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Twenty-three of the deaths happened in Illinois, 21 in Michigan, seven in Indiana and six in Wisconsin.
