GR City Commission turns down $500,000 violence reduction grant

The Grand Rapids City Commission is turning down a $500,000 violence reduction grant that would have been spent on police overtime as well as other expenses.

The commission still would have considered the ShotSpotter technology that the GRPD is in favor of but the commission is split on the idea.

The Kent County officials administering the CARES Act funding took away a requirement that the money be used for the technology but the commission continues to talk about it during a virtual meeting Tuesday.

The Commission remains split on how to spend the money, even with ShotSpotter on the back burner.
