Deal Struck to Reroute Sewer, Could Lead to Riverfront Amphitheater

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - A deal has been struck to reroute a sanitary sewer that has blocked development in downtown Grand Rapids for years.

Richard MacKeigan, the executive director of the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention-Arena Authority, tells WOOD-TV that it's the first step toward constructing a proposed 14,000-seat riverfront amphitheater.

"The authority feels that live entertainment will come back and outdoor live entertainment may come back even quicker," MacKeigan said.

The project carries and $18.6 million price tag, which will be covered in part by Amway Hotel Corporation and 63 Market Avenue Holdings.

The city commission approved the project during its meeting last night.
