U of M to close residence halls for winter semester

The University of Michigan says they will close residence halls for the winter semester for students who do not need to be on campus.

UM President Mark S. Schlissel announced the difficult decision on Friday.

Students who do not need to be on campus are being asked to learn remotely from their permanent residences.

The university will shift to single occupancy in a room.

U of M will make testing mandatory for some and increase access for others.

Undergraduate students who need housing will be able to request access based on health, wellness or safety, financial or academic, status as an international student o extenuating circumstances.

All housing contracts will be cancelled.
