ELECTIONS

LANSING, Mich. (WOOD TV8) — The congressional 3rd congressional district race in West Michigan between Republican Peter Meijer and Democrat Hillary Scholten was too early to call as of Wednesday morning, with many votes still uncounted.

Political observers note the two are running in what many view as Michigan’s most competitive House race after Rep. Justin Amash decided not to seek reelection.

If Scholten were to win, she would be the first Democrat to represent Grand Rapids in Congress in 44 years. The 3rd District, which the five-term Amash has represented for a decade, stretches south to the Battle Creek area.

Today, the GOP-leaning district is seen by Democrats as an opportunity to flip the seat with the departure of Amash.
