55-60 MPH winds fuel gale warnings on Lake Michigan, local power outages

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Gale force winds and snow squawls swept through West Michigan on Sunday afternoon leaving thousands of homes and businesses in West Michigan without power Sunday.

As of 7pm Sunday night in West Michigan, the following counties had at least 100 outages:

  • Barry County: 177 outages
  • Kent County: 276 outages
  • Ottawa County: 519 outages
  • Van Buren County: 115

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service says gusts from the northwest could reach up to 55 mph through Sunday evening. Gale force winds will allow waves to build to 10 to 15 feet on Lake Michigan through early Sunday night. Shoreline flooding and more lakeshore erosion is possible.
