'Unlock Mich.' submits 539K signatures to repeal Whitmer emergency powers

Unlock Michigan Petition Drive

by: NEWS 8

(WOOD TV/NEWS 8) — The Associated Press is reporting that a Michigan group has submitted 539,000 petition signatures on Friday in an effort to repeal a law that has given Gov. Gretchen Whitmer broad emergency powers during the coronavirus pandemic, demanding that the veto-proof initiative be put before the Republican-led Legislature before year’s end.

To qualify and move the effort forward, Unlock Michigan needs roughly 340,000 valid voter signatures and has a 200,000 signature cushion.

The group believes state election officials can certify the measure in 60 days — a figure that has been questioned by Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
