Leelanau County road commissioner Tom Eckerle used a racial slur before a county meeting when asked why he wasn't wearing a mask.
Road commissioner chair Bob Joyce confirmed Eckerle blamed the spread of the virus on the (racial slur) in Detroit.
The meeting could be attended on phone for the community so anyone listening could have heard the comments. The comments were made before the start of the meeting so they were not recorded.
There are now calls from across the state for Eckerle to resign.
