Attorneys offer legal advice as statewide eviction ban ends

by: Dana Whyte

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An existing executive order issued by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s that temporarily bans evictions ends is set to end Wednesday at midnight.

Legal experts say the key right now is communication, especially as landlords and tenants work to stay afloat during the coronavirus pandemic,

Kevin Sutherland, a real estate attorney based in Grand Rapids said, “This certainly is an interesting time for both landlords and tenants."

Once the order was put into place in March, Michigan landlords have not been able to evict tenants who don’t pay their rent, but on Thursday, those rules change.

The director of litigation for the Legal Aid of Western Michigan Karen Tjapkes represents tenants and she agrees it is important the two sides work together.
