Deadly house fire in downtown Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say one adult and one child have died after a large house fire in downtown Grand Rapids.

News 8 learned from Grand Rapids fire officials that the adult died at the scene of the fire. The child died after being taken to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital for treatment. Neither their names nor their ages have been released.

Fire officials said the fire happened in the 500 block of Sheldon Avenue SE around 9 a.m. Saturday.

When emergency responders arrived, they found the house engulfed in smoke and flames.

GRFD said at least 50 firefighters were on scene to fight the flames.
