Federal government sends $1.4 billion in stimulus checks to dead people

$1.4 billion in stimulus checks was sent to over one million deceased Americans accorning to a government watchdog report released to Congress released Thursday.

The finding from the Government Accountability Office, an independent nonpartisan congressional agency, is part of a massive review of the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report paints a clearer picture of what critics called a muddled roll-out by the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department of more than 160 million payments worth $269 billion.
