The Attorney General in Minnesota, Keith Ellison(D), has upgraded the charge against Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who knelt onGeorge Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes shortly before Floyd died, to second-degree murder.

AG Ellison also brought charges against Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane — the other officers who were at the scene of Floyd's death — with aiding and abetting second-degree murder Wednesday afternoon at a press conference.

Initially, former officer Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday by the Hennepin County attorney's office. Both the Hennepin County medical examiner and an independent examiner hired by Floyd's family ruled Floyd's death a homicide.

Former presidential hopeful Sen.Amy Klobuchar supported Ellison’s move, calling it “another important step for justice.”
