Romney breaks with GOP on vote to convict Trump

Washington— The Senate is set to issue a verdict in President Trump's impeachment trial with a vote that is all but certain to end in his acquittal Wednesday afternoon, but Republican Senator Mitt Romney announced he would nonetheless side with Democrats and vote to convict.

In a dramatic floor speech, Romney announced he would vote to convict the president on one of two articles of impeachment, becoming the lone GOP senator to do so.

"This verdict is ours to render. The people will judge us for how well and faithfully we fulfilled our duty," Romney said. "The grave question the Constitution tasks senators to answer is whether the president committed an act so extreme and egregious that it rises to the level of a 'high crime and misdemeanor.' Yes, he did."
