Skilled trades celebrated at signing ceremony

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — College had always been part of the plan for Caleb Hansen.

But as his graduation from Zeeland East High School neared, Caleb’s dad had a realization.

“We started filling out the forms and getting everything set (for college) and, it hit me one day,” Dan Hansen said. “I never asked the question, ‘is college even right for Caleb?’ We never had that conversation.”

When they finally did talk about it, Dan Hansen discovered his son was interested in becoming an electrician.

“I knew I really didn’t want to go to college,” Caleb said, who graduated from Zeeland East High School Thursday evening. “I knew I wanted to do something with my hands.”

That’s when Caleb’s dad thought to reach out to Brad Krause, president of Service Professor, one of West Michigan’s biggest home service and repair companies.

In a stroke of good fortune and great timing, Krause happened to be starting a program, which he hoped to attract more young people to skilled trade professions.
