Judge throws out life sentence for teen killer

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (via WOOD TV) — A man who was originally sentenced to life in prison for a murder he committed as a teenager will now be eligible for parole in less than three years.

Maurice Sanders, 42, was resentenced Wednesday to between 25 and 60 years in prison for felony murder and an additional two years for a weapons charge.

In December 1993, Sanders shot cab driver Louis Biles III in the head, killing him, in Grand Rapids. Sanders was 16 at the time. He was sentenced in 1994 to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

But after the U.S. Supreme Court decided it was unconstitutional to automatically sentence juveniles to life without parole, Sanders was granted a resentencing.
