Flooding sparks state of emergency in Newaygo Co.

WHITE CLOUD, Mich. (WOOD) — Newaygo County officials have declared a local state of emergency after heavy rains and melting snow Thursday washed out roadways and raised water levels in area lakes and rivers.

TheAmerican Red Crossis working with residents of flooded homes in the Martin Lake area, north of Fremont.

Newaygo County Emergency Management Director Abby Watkins says the Muskegon River is at moderate flood stage and is expected to rise.

Heavy rains Thursday night also washed out several roads. Friday morning, the Newaygo County Road Commission said the following roads were closed:

  • 12 Mile Road between Maple Island Avenue and Dickinson Avenue
  •  Cypress Avenue between 128th Street and 136th Street
  •  Cottonwood Ave. between 124th Street and 136th Street
  •  128th Street between Cypress Avenue and Cottonwood Avenue
  •  Luce Avenue between 24th Street and 32nd Street
