Muskegon Co. 911: Vital need for tech upgrade

MUSKEGON, Mich. (via WOOD TV 8) — It has only been four months since a surcharge proposal in Muskegon County to update emergency communications was rejected by voters, but public safety officials say the need is so vital that they are asking voters for the same package again on the May ballot.

For proponents, going back to voters asking to add $2.33 to the monthly 911 surcharge is a matter not of money but of safety for both citizens and those tasked with protecting them.

Misu Peltoniemi, a 17-year veteran of Muskegon Central Dispatch 911, said that every hour of every day, she sees examples of antiquated communication equipment causing frustration and delays.

For example, she said there was a crash at the northern end of the county Thursday where a Michigan State Police trooper was trying to get medical help for a citizen.
