Suspect in Kalamazoo Co. businessman's shooting ID'd

COOPER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Investigators are identifying the man believed to have shot a Kalamazoo County business owner.

Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says 49-year-old Peter Zwartshot Brent Hook multiple times inside Hook’s business.

Hook was discovered by an employee around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday inside Tough Coat Custom Powder Coating on East D Avenue near Westnedge Avenue in Cooper Township.

Fuller said Wednesday that Hook remains in critical condition following surgery.

The sheriff said after the shooting, Zwart contacted his family to tell them what he had done — that’s how investigators found out about him.

Fuller said detectives found Zwart dead on his Allegan County property from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The sheriff’s office said Zwart knew the victim, but did not give a motive for the crime.

Hook is a father and is well-known in the community. He is an avid racecar driver, known for his involvement at the nearby Kalamazoo Speedway.
