WATCH: 44-vehicle pile up on 96 Westbound results in freeway shutdown

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (via WOOD TV) — Police shut down a stretch of westbound I-96 east of Grand Rapids because of a pileup involving at least 44 vehicles.

The crashes happened around 1 p.m. near Whitneyville Avenue in Cascade Township. The westbound lanes are closed at the township line along Snow Avenue; the nearest exit before that is Alden Nash Avenue to Lowell.

Three people were taken to hospitals. The severity of their injuries was not immediately known.

The exact cause of the crash is not yet known, but one person involved said it began when a semi-truck started to jackknife.
