GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The blast of arctic air is here and will continue through the weekend.
Cold temperatures mean using more energy to heat your home, and a potential spike on your bill. DTE Energy gave 24 Hour News 8 tips you can use at home to keep your bill from rising.
Five simple tricks for reducing your heating bill:
- Turning your thermostat back seven to 10 degrees for eight hours a day from its normal setting can help you save money. It can save as much as 10 percent a year on heating.
- A humidifier can help you feel comfortable during winter, when your thermostat is set at a lower temperature. Humidifiers are usually used during colder months, when heating systems tend to dry out the air in your home. Although, moist air feels warmer and holds heat better.
- Reverse the motor and operate the ceiling fan at a low speed, in a clockwise direction during winter months. This will produce an updraft, and force warm air near the ceiling to the ground. Keep in mind, when using the ceiling fan make sure to adjust your thermostat. Additional money could be saved by remembering this step.
- Change your furnace and air filters regularly, the allotted time is every three months (minimum). Filters lower the amount of dust and dirt that flow through ductwork in your home. Dirty filters slow down air flow and make systems work harder to keep you warm.
