It's cold: Make sure your car is prepared

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — With subzero temperatures stretching across much of West Michigan, your car could be iced over and sluggish as you head out the door.

24 Hour News 8 spoke with a mechanic and automotive store manager to help clarify common misconceptions and add some new tricks to help make sure your commute is safe and uneventful.

"Visibility is everything," Auto Zone sales manager Mike D'Angelo said. "There are a few things you can do the day before a storm system hits that may take some time, but they could really save your life."

Those tips include:

  • Put your windshiel wipers in the upright position. This prevents them from freezing to the windshield.
  • Scrape as much ice as you can off the windshield as possible. The frozen surface has a 'sandpaper effect' and can damage the rubber blades.
  • Buy a winter-blend windshield washer fluid. These blends have a higher alcohol content than standard washer fluids and are therefore less likely to freeze.
