GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Checking the air quality in the city of Grand Rapids could soon be as easy as checking the weather.
On Thursday night, the Grand Rapids Air Quality Initiative hosted a community meeting to discuss new air sensors being installed throughout the city. City officials said five sensors have been installed since the fall and plan to have a total of 40.
“The more data that we collect and the more information we have can impact people in different ways. Different partners will use the data to study and make different changes or recommend policy decisions,” Grand Rapids Utility Renovation Manager Nicole Pesch told 24 Hour News 8.
The sensors will be placed on fixtures like light poles and crosswalk signs and on city-owned buildings. Every 15 minutes, the technology takes a sample of air and records its data. The data can then be compared to other sensor locations.
