MSU trustees name new interim president

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) — The Michigan State University Board of Trustees have named a new interim president after John Engler's resignation.

Satish Udpa was named the new interim president of the university, effective immediately.

The board accpeted and accelerated former Interim President John Engler's resignation to today. He announced Wednesday he would resign next week.

In an 11-page resignation letter (PDF) to Board Chair Dianne Byrum, Engler said he was resigning at the request of trustees. He did not apologize for comments he made to The Detroit News editorial board last week in which he said that some survivors of sexual abuse by former sports doctor Larry Nassar were enjoying the public attention.

Engler's selection as interim president has been contentious since he got the job in January 2018 and he has made other comments since then that renewed the controversy. He had maintained the support of the board, however, until the election of new trustees late last year shifted the majority out of his favor.

He will leave the job Jan. 23.
