Battle Creek, Grand Rapids among mobility grant recipients

DETROIT (WOOD) — Grand Rapids and Battle Creek will receive thousands of dollars in mobility grants from the state.

Four recipients of $4.5 million from the $8 Million Michigan Mobility Challenge grants were announced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Tuesday. The state said the $8 million will fund pilot transportation projects that can solve mobility gaps for seniors, persons with disabilities and veterans throughout Michigan.

Battle Creek will receive $1.2 million to use for an autonomous electric shuttle at the Battle Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center, located at 5500 Armstrong Road.

Team Grand Rapids — which consists of The Rapid, city of Grand Rapids and Kent County Disability Advocates — was awarded $373,000 for a ride-sharing app.

Southwest Michigan will receive $1 million and $1.1 million to the Central Upper Peninsula.

“The projects that we announce today will make it easier for our veterans - people who served our country, for those who are not able-bodied and for our senior citizens. So that they can full participate in our society, doing things that so many of take for granted, going to the doctor or picking up groceries,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
