HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — A West Ottawa High School student arrested for bringing a gun to school, then jailed for creating a rap song that threatened a witness, must undergo a competency exam.
A judge Tuesday ordered the exam for 17-year-old Davian Weston to determine if he can understand the trial process and assist in his own defense.
When Weston was released after the Sept. 13 gun incident, his mother told 24 Hour News 8 her son is a good kid who doesn't understand the situation. She said her son found the gun, that it was broken and unloaded, and he forgot it was in his backpack.
When 24 Hour News 8 asked Weston about the fear the incident incited among students, staff and parents, his response was “My bad.”
